Mother-daughter relationships can sometimes be complicated but the bond is typically strong and close knit- especially after it survives the teenage years. Moms can be teachers, friends and guides for their daughters. Daughters can also be caregivers, a support system and an inspiration for their mothers. Sometimes the daughter follows in their mother’s foot steps while other times paving their own way. Mothers are often inspired by their daughters to try something new or look at the world from a new perspective. In honor of Mother’s Day, we are celebrating some of our favorite dynamic mother-daughter duos.
Diana Ross and Tracee Ellis Ross | Entertainers
Music legend Diana Ross is well known for the many popular hits that secured her superstar status, but her daughter, Emmy-nominated actress, Tracee Ellis Ross, is mega-talented in her own way. Diana Ross has five kids, though her daughter Tracee has most closely followed in Diana’s footsteps. The actress, singer, and TV host has taken after her mom and made a name for herself in the entertainment industry over the years. Not only are these women talented, but they also have an incredible sense of style.
“I’m extremely blessed to have the extraordinary mother that I have, and I don’t mean Diana Ross, I mean the mother. My mom paved a road that didn’t exist, as did Oprah, says Ellis-Ross.
Jerry Hall and Georgia May Jagger | Supermodels
Neither Jerry Hall, the famous actress and model or her daughter Georgia May ever thought she’d follow in her mom’s footsteps as a model. Eventually, it seemed like it was unavoidable and once Georgia May decided to pursue it, her career took off. Not only have they both had successful careers as individuals, they have even had the chance to model together. However, Hall is most proud of her kids as people outside of their careers.
“I mean, I think the most important thing you can teach your children is thoughtfulness and kindness to others,” says Hall. “And I’m very proud of all my children for being so sweet and kind to everyone.”
Charly and Barbara Sturm | Innovators
Dr. Barbara Sturm, the aesthetics doctor is well known for her non-surgical anti-aging skin treatments, creating several award-winning beauty products. Eventually, Dr. Sturm’s passion for the company rubbed off on her daughter, Charly, who is the vice president of brand development for the company. The duo is inspired by each other. Charly was inspired by her mom’s passion and dedication to her business and Dr. Sturm values her daughter’s taste and instincts. While they work in different aspects of the business they often collaborate organically and cherish anytime they get to travel together.
Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton | AdvocatEs
Julie Andrews has long been respected as an actor, singer and entertainer, but many may not know that she is a passionate advocate for children’s literacy. Andrews and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton, have written over 30 children’s books together. Now, after launching their new podcast, “Julie’s Library,” Andrews and Hamilton continue to advocate for diversity in literacy.
“You cannot imagine what a gift it is to me to work with my daughter,” Andrews said. “I just enjoy it. It’s actually the thing keeping us most occupied these days.”
Val and Breezy Griffith | entrepreneurs
Val Griifth and her daughter, Breezy, were on a road trip that inspired them to create a new snack brand that was healthy and satisfying. With no formal background in business, the duo created, SkinnyDipped– snack company that started by using the simple combination of almonds and chocolate. SkinnyDipped was born with the goal of creating insanely delicious snacks with way less sugar and no dirty secrets.
“Our different mindsets and personalities create a really great balance—we often joke that I’m the accelerator pedal, and she’s the emergency brake, and we couldn’t have SkinnyDipped without both of those things,” she jokes. “We’ve fostered an incredible mutual respect for each other, and that has not only made us solid business partners but has also strengthened our personal relationship; believe it or not, we still spend most of our time away from SkinnyDipped together!”
Mother’s Day is a perfect time to honor the GYNOMITE women in your life- whether they are your biological mother or a female that has impacted your life in a meaningful way. Take time to tell them what they mean to you.
